Getting to Know You

SUNDAYS ARE OVERWHELMINGLY BORING for me in Fairgarden. I’m home alone while everyone else is at church. TV is only so interesting for so long, and I’m not in the mood to play my guitar. So, instead of doing anything, I’m lying on my bed, staring at the ceiling. I guess I could browse the internet on my phone or even my grandparents’ laptop now that I’m not grounded from it, but I don’t feel like doing that either.

I got a call from Mom and Dad earlier. They didn’t say anything in the house was out of place or anything weird, so it looks like I got out of that whole mess without having to face any serious consequences. That’s good at least.

Finally, I hear my grandparents come in the house. They seem to stay late after church mingling, so it’s always well after the meeting has ended by the time they get home.

My mind wanders to Avery. I hardly talked to him at all yesterday. He went through all that trouble to help me out on Friday, but then he got all pissy for some reason when I was just trying to talk to him. I want to find out what his deal is. I want to know what he’s been doing out in the forest. What does he have to hide? And why is he nice to me sometimes and so damn cold other times?

Then it hits me: the perfect idea.

I pull out my phone and text Avery.

[12:13 PM] What’s your favorite food?

I don’t expect him to reply right away, so I’m surprised when I get a reply just a minute later.

[12:13 PM] Why?

I shake my head and text him back.

[12:14 PM] Just answer the question.

I put my phone back on my nightstand and grab my guitar. I play a few warm ups and think about this little game I’m starting with Avery. I’m going to ask him a single question every day. The question will always be personal, a way to get to know him better. Knowing his favorite food isn’t going to give me any clues about what he’s been doing in the forest, but if I play this right, I just might get some answers—eventually. At the very least, I don’t think a question a day is going to put him off, and that’s the best I can hope for right now, with the way he completely shuts me down when he doesn’t want to talk about something.

Avery texts back.

[12:30 PM] Smoked salmon.

Okay then. Smoked salmon it is. Can’t say I expected that, but whatever. There’s a lot I don’t know about Avery. That’s the whole point of this. I’m going to get to know him.
